Driving Tips for Japan

Whether you’re a first-time driver in Japan or a frequent visitor, our driving tips will give you confidence on the road.

  • Speed Limits: The speed limit on unmarked roads is 60 kph (37 mph).
  • Toll Roads: All the vehicles in our fleet have Electronic Toll Collection (ETC), so you don’t have to worry about paying tolls as you drive.
  • Radar: Highways in Japan use radar speed monitoring, so stay below the speed limit.
  • No Splash: As one of the more unusual driving rules in the world, it’s illegal to splash pedestrians while driving through a puddle in Japan.
  • Merging: If you let another driver merge into your lane, they may respond by blinking their hazard lights two or three times. This means “thank you.”
  • Gas: You can choose between self-service and full-service gas stations when driving a SIXT car rental in Japan, but keep in mind that the full-service stations usually require some knowledge of Japanese.

Best places to visit in Japan

Car rental in Japan gives you the opportunity and flexibility to explore on your own time. Visit these places on your Japanese bucket list:

  • Hakone: Situated a 1.5-hour drive outside of Tokyo, Hakone boasts views of Mount Fuji across Lake Ashi, as well as onsen (hot spring) bathing experiences. Parking is readily available on the main shopping street, but it’s best to arrive early.
  • Shikoku Island: If you’re looking for a lesser-known journey, Shikoku Island is the best choice. This drive will take you through Japan’s rural landscapes, small communities, and ultimately to the sea.
  • Kyoto: For temples and Japanese cultural heritage, there’s no better destination than Kyoto. A SIXT car rental in Japan allows you to see all the temples at your pace.

We came here for car rental. People who helped us were very friendly. However, it's not possible to rent a car without a Japanese international driving licence or an official translation of another international driving license. It's just Japanese policy, not of Sixt. So we chose an alternative.

If you have difficulty finding the shop ask for Orix rent a car, as this is a partner of Sixt. Always look over the car before driving off.
