Traffic is predictably heavy in Tokyo, but perhaps not as busy as you might think. Many commuters in this bustling metropolis use public transportation and the road network is excellent. When you rent a car in Tokyo the expressway is the most efficient way to get around the city. Tolls to drive on it are relatively expensive but it will help you avoid delays. During rush hour, Tokyo traffic spikes like most major cities but outside of the city limits you should not experience major delays.

Much of the architecture here was spared during WWII and there is an abundance of traditional craft shops and charming cafes.

To get a view over the whole of Tokyo you should take a trip up its tallest tower, the Tokyo Skytree. There is a 360-degree observation deck and on a clear day you can see as far as Mount Fuji. Other must-sees include the ancient Buddhist temple Sensō-ji, cutting-edge exhibitions at the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art and the Imperial Palace and gardens.

The Great Buddha of Kamakura makes for a fantastic day trip and the site is a popular destination from Tokyo. Kamakura was the political center of Japan in medieval times and is dotted with impressive shrines and statues. It is also a seafront city and the bay is a popular spot for surfers who mainly frequent Yuigahama Beach. We also highly recommend Kamakura’s Hōkoku-ji temple for its bamboo garden.

The Hossawa Falls in Hinohara Village is popular rural getaway and easily reachable with a car rental from Tokyo. A stunning and tranquil spot, the 60-meter-high waterfalls are accessible by a trail and if you are feeling adventurous you can go on from here to explore Mount Sengenrei.
