- Rainy Season: During the rainy season, downpours often start suddenly and flood the roads. Proceed with caution and adjust your speed accordingly.
- Share the Road: You’ll be sharing the road with buses, minivans, songtaews, tuk-tuks, and most importantly – scooters. Always check for scooters before changing lanes.
- Rural Areas: Keep an eye out for dogs, water buffalo, chickens, and other animals in the road.
- City Driving: Big cities like Bangkok and Phuket experience traffic congestion during peak times. Be patient and follow the rules of the road.
- Stay Left: Vehicles drive on the left side of the road in Thailand.

Good to know when renting in Thailand
You must be at least 21 to rent a car from SIXT in Thailand. For some car categories, you need a driver’s license held for 1 year or more.
We allow one-way rentals, and those between stations within Bangkok or Phuket are free of charge. A fee applies to other one-way rentals within Thailand.
You will drive on the left-hand side of the road in Thailand. Be aware that driving can be chaotic, with loose adherence to traffic rules. Parking is done wherever you can find a spot, and also lookout for drivers turning and changing lanes without signaling.
If your plans in Thailand aren’t firm, don’t worry. Choose the “Pay Later” option when booking and cancel your reservation free of charge.
