Driving Tips for Thailand

Whether it’s your first time visiting Thailand or you’re a frequent traveler, our driving tips will help you navigate the roads.

  • Speed Limits: Expect speed limits of 60 kph (37 mph) in urban and town areas, 90 kph (55 mph) on open roads, and 120 kph (74 mph) on highways.
  • Rainy Season: During the rainy season, downpours often start suddenly and flood the roads. Proceed with caution and adjust your speed accordingly.
  • Share the Road: You’ll be sharing the road with buses, minivans, songtaews, tuk-tuks, and most importantly – scooters. Always check for scooters before changing lanes.
  • Rural Areas: Keep an eye out for dogs, water buffalo, chickens, and other animals in the road.
  • City Driving: Big cities like Bangkok and Phuket experience traffic congestion during peak times. Be patient and follow the rules of the road.
  • Stay Left: Vehicles drive on the left side of the road in Thailand.
  • Honking: Only honk your horn to alert other drivers of your presence.

Best places to visit in Thailand

Booking a SIXT car rental in Thailand is the best way to explore on your own terms and visit off-the-beaten-path destinations:

  • Samoeng Loop: Located in Chiang Mai, the Samoeng Loop is a popular motorbike ride, but it makes an excellent road trip in a SIXT rental car. Drive through the mountains, stopping at waterfalls, coffee shops, strawberry fields, and scenic viewpoints.
  • Khao Kho: Discover temples, national parks, and a sea of clouds when you drive to Khao Kho. Because the attractions are spread out, booking a rental car in Thailand is the best way to travel.
  • Phuket: Whether you’re looking for beaches, South Thai food, adventure parks, or shopping, Phuket is best experienced by car.

As the largest island in Thailand, it takes up to an hour and a half to cross, so deciding to rent a car in Thailand is a smart move.
